History
Established in 1963 by Luís Jorge Ortigão Costa, Ortigão Costa Stud is committed to create an elite of black horses. Our breeding herd has 50 black coated Lusitano mares and 14 ‘Português de Desporto’ mares, sired by the one and only Moorlands Totilas – a top reference in the sports stage worldwide.
Our horses are faithful ambassadors of our breeding project, representing our Stud all over the globe – they’re the ones who made us a recognizable brand and place us as the biggest private Stud in the international exportation field.
Our horses are versatile and show great aptitude for leisure riding, bullfighting and dressage.
With outstanding beauty, exceptional character and high functionality, Ortigão Costa horses have gathered countless achievements. They are currently considered premium quality animals, especially in the dressage sports and bullfighting arenas.
In order to meet the high demands of the international dressage markets, OC Stud started a new breeding project of Luso-Warmblood horses back in 2010 – at the core of this project was the unsurpassable stallion Moorland Totilas. Currently Ortigão Costa is a modern Stud farm, adapted to the most demanding international standards that never loses sight of its’ origins and tradition that guided us towards the present.

Our History
Ortigão Costa Stud was founded in 1963 by Luís Jorge Ortigão Costa. In this picture, Luís is being awarded with the ‘Campeão Ibérico’ trophy by the hand of the Portuguese prime minister Professor Marcelo Caetano.
FURIA, sired by Sultão MV and bred by Coimbra Stud, was the first stallion of OC Stud. This horse was an excelling father who gave us several high-quality products such as Bafejado OC and Oficial OC.
Later along the way, we acquired ELMO MV the second breeding stallion of the Stud.
A born artist in the bullfighting arenas, this horse built a successful career under the saddle of
Manuel Jorge de Oliveira.
Alongside with FÚRIA, ELMO MV played a major role as a stallion:
these two sires are still considered the genetic Foundation of OC Stud.
On the seventies, we introduced the genetics of BABEL OC. Awarded with the title of ‘Iberian Champion’ in 1972, he was sold to Brazil where he left countless descendants.

RIPADO OC was a very important horse on the history of the Lusitano in the Dressage scene. Under the saddle of the Olympic rider Pinto, Ripado OC was one of the first Lusitano horses to compete internationally at Grand Prix level. In 1995 he returned to Ortigão Costa Stud and joined our breeding project until his death in 2001.
In the nineties, we started betting on DITO, a sono f Quimoni bred by Oliveira e Irmãos Stud. This stallion continues to leave his mark on our breeding project through our famous matriarch Ordenança OC who has presented us with several superior quality products.
Still in the nineties, we managed to fulfill one of our main goals: to only use horses bred by our Stud as stallions. Since then some of our most important stallions are Cartaxo OC, Delicado OC, Ilusionista OC, Jalifa OC and Justo OC.
In 2010 we kick-started our Luso-Warmbloods breeding project with a major focus on Dressage and with the goal of meeting the International markets’ demands. Our first bet was on the legendary Moorland Totilas. Recently, we also introduced the genetics of world-class dressage stallion such as DeNiro and Desperados.
